To make your move efficient and easy we have developed this handy guide to help you organize and prepare for the daunting task of moving.
2-4 Weeks Prior:
Begin by packing items you don’t use everyday. Refer back to your moving list to begin setting out items that will be taken to your storage unit. Use good, sturdy boxes (like the ones sold by Battle Ground Mini Storage). Make sure each box is sealed properly and is labeled clearly.
Dispose of any flammable or hazardous materials that won’t be moved.
Go through attics, basements and closets, disposing of what you don’t need and packing everything else.
Begin moving items into storage and stacking those boxes you will be moving into your new residence in an out-of-the-way place such a garage or unused corner.
1 Week Prior:
If you are using a moving company, call to confirm your moving date. Double check addresses for both your current and new residences.
Continue packing any items that will not be needed again prior to your move.
Set aside boxes that you will hand carry in a separate pile. It is helpful to also mark these boxes as “hand carry.” It is also a good idea to mark any boxes with delicate items as “fragile” and transport those personally, as well.
Arrange for child care for small children for the day of moving. Make a plan for when pets will be moved and where they will stay during the move to ensure their safety.
Empty, defrost and clean your refrigerator one-to-two days prior to your move.
Pack separate boxes or bags for items your will need immediately after moving such as toiletries, clothing, snacks, trash bags, pet supplies, and children’s personal belongings.
On Your Moving Day:
Double check that all boxes are clearly labeled and properly sealed.
Make a final sweep through your current residence and check drawers, closets, and shelves to make sure everything is packed and ready to move. Don’t forget to check attics, garages, and outdoor buildings such as sheds.
Once everything has been moved, inspect the premises for anything that might have gotten overlooked. Turn off all lights, close and lock all windows, check that all remaining appliances are off and lock all the doors.
